Suraji
Suraji is an Indonesian artist from Bantul, Yogyakarta, known for his symbolic paintings that often portray animals and elements of nature to reflect social realities. He studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta (ISI Yogyakarta). His works have been exhibited internationally, including at the Osaka Triennale, where he received the Osaka 21st Century Association Prize in 2001.
Suraji’s paintings frequently address social issues such as corruption, greed, and environmental concerns through symbolic imagery. Animals such as lions, rats, wolves, and tigers often appear as metaphors for human behavior and power structures. In 2008, his work Jakarta Berburu Tikus (Jakarta Hunting Rats) received the Grand Prize at the Jakarta Art Awards National Painting Competition. Through his distinctive visual language, Suraji invites viewers to reflect on the complex relationship between humans, society, and nature.
