Hardi

Hardi was an Indonesian visual artist associated with the Gerakan Seni Rupa Baru, a movement that challenged conventional artistic practices in Indonesia during the 1970s. Born in Blitar, East Java, he studied at the Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia (ASRI) from 1971 to 1974 under artists such as Fadjar Sidik and Widayat, before continuing his studies at the Jan van Eyck Academie in the Netherlands from 1975 to 1977.

Early in his career, Hardi’s works reflected strong social and political critique aligned with the ideals of the New Art Movement. In 1978 he was briefly arrested after presenting a provocative photomontage titled President of 2001: Suhardi, though he was soon released with the support of Adam Malik.

Over time, his practice evolved toward expressionism, producing numerous portraits of historical figures such as Raden Saleh and Joko Widodo, as well as works inspired by mythology. In addition to painting, he was also known for his craftsmanship in making traditional kris blades. Hardi held numerous exhibitions in Indonesia and abroad and remained active in cultural discourse until his passing in 2023.
