Dolf Breetvelt
1892 – 1975
Adolf "Dolf" Breetvelt was the eldest son of renowned Dutch painter Henri Breetvelt. He studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague before travelling to the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia), where he taught art while developing his own practice. His work drew from European movements including Impressionism and Expressionism. It was also enriched by a deep connection to Eastern Asian cultures formed during his travels through Formosa, Japan, Hong Kong, and Cambodia.
Back in the Netherlands, he joined the Vrij Beelden Group, and the Second World War became a turning point that pushed him toward abstraction. His paintings and gouaches are known for their rich colors, layered structures, and balanced compositions. In 1951 he expanded into sculpture and also collaborated with architects, exhibiting widely with the Vrij Beelden Group and in solo shows including the Fodor Museum in Amsterdam.
