Born in Yogyakarta in 1942, Suwaji studied at the Indonesian Fine Arts Academy (ASRI) Yogyakarta from 1958 and later became a lecturer there, a role he continues to hold. His first solo exhibition was held at the Goethe-Institut, and he has participated in numerous group shows, including 19 Pelukis Indonesia in Singapore and Malaysia (1967).
Suwaji received the Wendy Sorenson Memorial Fund Award in 1977 and exhibited widely across ASEAN countries in 1985. His later exhibitions include a solo show at Melia Purosani Hotel, Yogyakarta (1994), and participation in the International Borobudur Festival at H. Widayat Museum (2003).
