Sutopo studied at the STSRI ASRI Art Institute in Yogyakarta from 1974 to 1978, where he continues to live and work. His deep connection to nature traces back to childhood, when he would accompany his father, a forestry officer, on journeys through rivers, hills, and forests teeming with wildlife. That early intimacy with the natural world never left him and became the well from which his entire practice draws.
Rejecting complicated aesthetic concepts in favor of quiet observation, Sutopo paints landscapes that reflect both lived experience and an inner life shaped by nature's rhythms. His concern for the environment is genuine and active. Troubled by increasing deforestation and its consequences, he sets aside a portion of his painting sales to purchase land in remote areas around Yogyakarta, preserving spaces he can return to whenever he wishes.
