I Gusti Ayu Kadek Murniasih
1966 – 2006
I Gusti Ayu Kadek Murniasih (1966–2006), known as Murni, was an Indonesian artist recognized for her bold depictions of sexuality, trauma, and female identity. Born in Bali, she worked as a domestic worker before studying art under Dewa Putu Mokoh, developing a style with clear outlines, minimal shading, and vivid colors.
Despite resistance to her explicit themes, she challenged societal norms, bringing female experiences and taboos into focus. Her impact on contemporary Indonesian art continues to grow, with her works now collected in major institutions like Tate Modern, UK, The Centre Pompidou, France, and the National Gallery Singapore.
