Mochtar Apin
1923 – 1994
Mochtar Apin was a painter, illustrator, writer, and educator at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). He explored cubism and abstract expressionism, studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1953–1957) and the Deutsche Akademie der Künste in Berlin (1957–1958), and later received a Cultural Award from the Australian government in 1974.
In 1946 he co-founded the Gelanggang Seniman Muda movement in Jakarta, where he promoted a universalist vision of art that could reach people from all cultural backgrounds. His years in France deepened his admiration for Victor Vasarely’s optical art, which inspired him to create bold geometric paintings. Returning to Bandung in 1958, he joined the ITB faculty and continued to teach while actively shaping Indonesia’s modern art discourse.
