Ida Bagus Rai
B. 1933
Ida Bagus Rai is a Balinese painter from Padangtegal, Gianyar, whose work reflects a profound understanding of Bali’s cultural and spiritual traditions. He studied under the renowned Dutch artist Rudolf Bonnet, whose guidance helped refine his technical skills while allowing him to develop a distinctive artistic voice. Drawing inspiration from Balinese literature, mythology, religion, and philosophy, Rai is particularly known for portraying mythological figures with a more humanized and expressive presence, bringing traditional narratives closer to everyday experience.
His works have been exhibited internationally, including at the Singapore Art Museum, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Jakarta, and the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. His paintings are also held in important collections, including the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam, reflecting his significance within the tradition of modern Balinese art.
