Chen Wen Hsi
1906 – 1991
Chen Wen Hsi was one of the most important pioneers of Singaporean modern art after settling in Singapore in 1949. Before arriving in Singapore, he had already established himself as a respected artist in Southern China. He studied at the Shanghai College of Art and the Xinhua Academy of Fine Arts during the late 1920s, where he developed strong foundations in Chinese ink painting alongside an openness toward modern artistic experimentation.
During the 1950s, he became a lecturer at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and played a significant role in shaping the Nanyang Style, a movement that blended Eastern artistic traditions with modern influences and Southeast Asian sensibilities.
Chen was also regarded as one of the leading masters of Singapore’s Chinese brush painting. Nature became one of his greatest sources of inspiration, and he became especially celebrated for his depictions of gibbons, birds, plants, and landscapes. His works reveal the influence of the Lingnan style through expressive brushwork, dynamic compositions, and refined tonal balance.
Although deeply rooted in traditional Chinese painting, Chen also explored aspects of Cubism and occasionally incorporated geometric structures into his compositions. Through this synthesis of tradition and modernity, he helped redefine the possibilities of Chinese ink painting in Southeast Asia and left a lasting influence on the region’s artistic development.
