Emil Rizek
1901 – 1988
Emil Rizek was an Austrian painter known for his realistic depictions of landscapes, cityscapes, and scenes of everyday life. Born in Vienna, he studied under Anton Hlavatschek and Carl Fahringer before travelling extensively throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America in search of artistic inspiration. Between 1928 and 1931, he travelled across Java, Bali, and Sumatra, creating paintings that documented the people, landscapes, and daily life of Indonesia with remarkable sensitivity and detail.
Rizek’s work is characterized by careful observation, strong technical skill, and an interest in capturing ordinary moments. Influenced by European realism and Impressionism, he paid particular attention to light, atmosphere, and the lives of working people. His international travels enriched his artistic perspective, resulting in a diverse body of work that remains valued for both its artistic quality and documentary significance.
