Ida Bagus Made Togog

1913 1989

Ida Bagus Made Togog (1913–1989), born in Batuan, Bali, was a leading painter of the Batuan style, deeply rooted in Balinese traditions and beliefs. A member of the noble Brahmana clan and the Pita Maha organization, Togog's art primarily narrated religious stories, myths, and folklore from an insider's perspective, much like the wayang tradition.

His strength lay not just in technique, but in his ability to visually convey complex Balinese spiritual concepts, including the balance between macrocosm and microcosm. Inspired by Dutch painter Rudolf Bonnet, he translated Balinese lontar (religious texts) into drawings. Between 1936 and 1938, he created 83 paintings for anthropologists Gregory Bateson and Margaret Mead, often illustrating his dreams within Balinese belief contexts. Togog's works are held in major institutions globally, including the Tropen Museum Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum Leiden, Puri Lukisan Museum, and Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA) in Bali.
