I Ketut Murtika
1952 – 2019

I Ketut Murtika was one of the leading contemporary exponents of the Batuan school, a distinctive Balinese painting tradition renowned for its intricate detail, dense compositions, and narrative complexity. Born in Batuan, Gianyar, he studied under his uncle, the painter I Made Djata, and later received guidance from the renowned artist Rudolf Bonnet. Although deeply rooted in the classical Batuan style, Murtika developed a highly individual visual language distinguished by exceptional technical precision and meticulous craftsmanship. His paintings often drew upon the epics of the Mahabharata and Ramayana, as well as scenes from Balinese daily life, preserving traditional narratives while reflecting the living culture of the island.

Murtika's works are represented in major collections, including Museum Puri Lukisan, ARMA Museum, and Neka Art Museum, and have been exhibited extensively throughout Indonesia and abroad. Beyond his artistic practice, he remained deeply committed to the Balinese principle of ngayah, contributing his skills to temple decorations and ceremonial artworks while mentoring younger generations of painters. He devoted much of his life to teaching children in his community, ensuring the continuity of the Batuan tradition. Even during his final years, despite declining health, Murtika continued to paint with remarkable dedication, leaving behind a legacy defined by artistic excellence, cultural devotion, and generosity of spirit.
