Sindudarsono Sudjojono
1913 – 1985
Sindudarsono Sudjojono, widely known as S. Sudjojono, was a pioneering Indonesian artist, art critic, and writer, celebrated as the father of Indonesian modern art. A key figure in shaping the country’s artistic identity, he played a crucial role in the late 1930s and 1940s by co-founding influential artist groups, including Persagi (Persatuan Ahli Gambar Indonesia, or Association of Indonesian Drawing Specialists) and Seniman Indonesia Muda (Young Indonesian Artists Collective).
Sudjojono’s works were deeply rooted in his personal observations and experiences, reflecting his commitment to social realism. His paintings, sketches, and drawings often depicted the everyday lives of Indonesians with honesty and empathy. Over time, his style evolved to include expressive landscapes and portraits, capturing the essence of Indonesia’s cultural and social landscape.
