Nyoman Sujana Kenyem
B. 1972
Nyoman Sujana Kenyem (born 1972, Sayan, Ubud, Bali) is an Indonesian artist who evolved from traditional Balinese painting to a distinctive abstract style. Initially trained in the Young Artists tradition of Penestanan, he later studied at the Indonesian Art High School (SMSR) in Ubud and the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (STSI) in Denpasar (1992–1998).
Kenyems work, often meticulously detailed with calligraphic elements, explores the place of human beings in nature. His paintings are recognized by recurring motifs of small, dancing androgynous figures, trees, leaves, and large hovering rocks, all carefully shadowed to create a floating impression. He has received awards for Best Work from STSI in 1996 and 1998. His art has been exhibited globally at venues like NAkita Gallery, Stockholm (1996), Duta Fine Art, Jakarta (1998), and Puri Lukisan Museum, Ubud (2002). Notably, he had a solo show, The Bicycle Diaries, at Komaneka gallery in 2011.
