I Dewa Made Sugita
B. 1980
I Dewa Made Sugita grew up in Padang Tegal, a village in Ubud, Bali within a family of artists. Surrounded by the cultural richness of Bali from an early age, he developed a strong attachment to his hometown and its natural beauty. He pursued formal training at the Indonesian Institute of Art (ISI) and has since built a reputation as one of the important contemporary artists in Ubud. His works have been exhibited widely in Bali and Jakarta, and in 2011 he held a solo exhibition in Fribourg, Switzerland, where several of his paintings were acquired by collectors.
Sugita’s paintings are dominated by depictions of Balinese women, whom he portrays as central figures within the Balinese world. Drawing inspiration from masters such as Amedeo Modigliani, his female figures are imbued with elegance, intimacy, and spiritual resonance. At the same time, nature, especially trees and leaves, plays a vital role in his imagery, symbolizing cycles of life and the interconnectedness of humanity and the environment.
