Rukmini Yusuf Affandi

Rukmini Yusuf Affandi was born in Yogyakarta in 1961 into a family of artists. Growing up in the household of her father, the legendary Affandi, she developed a strong interest in painting from an early age. Though she never pursued formal art education, she trained directly under her father and later studied with Bandung painter Barli Sasmitawinata, in 1990. Since 1989, she has actively exhibited her works across Indonesia and abroad.

Rukmini is recognized for her distinctive painting technique, skilfully squeezing and dotting paint directly from the tube onto canvas with an energy that recalls her father’s expressive approach, yet with her own individuality. While she initially avoided the flowing, dynamic lines associated with Affandi, choosing instead a pointillist style of dots and touches, over time her work evolved toward bold lines that echo expressionist tendencies.
