Popo Iskandar
1927 – 2000
Popo Iskandar, born in Garut in 1927, began painting in 1944 and later graduated from Universitas Indonesia and Institut Teknologi Bandung. In addition to being a painter, he was also an art critic and writer. His works often feature animals—most notably chickens or roosters, tigers, and especially cats—which became one of his most recognizable subjects. In 1980, he received an art award from the Indonesian government and went on to exhibit widely in Indonesia and abroad.
