Dolorosa Sinaga
B. 1952
Dolorosa Sinaga is a prominent Indonesian sculptor whose work profoundly explores faith, crisis, solidarity, multiculturalism, and womens struggles. After studying at Institut Kesenian Jakarta (IKJ) and St. Martins School of Art in London, Sinaga became known for her hands-on approach to sculpting, personally working with metal. Her art actively challenges the male gaze, empowering her female subjects.
Notable works include Solidaritas, housed at Komnas Perempuan, depicting women in unity. Sinaga also served as Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at IKJ, where she continues to teach. In 1987, she founded the Somalaing Art Studio. Her work has been showcased globally, including a solo exhibition at the National Gallery, Jakarta (2001), and group shows at the National Gallery of the Philippines (1999) and Bentara Budaya Gallery, Jakarta (2001).
