Frederik Kasenda
1891 – 1942
Frederik Kasenda was born in Remboken, Minahasa, on 31 May 1891. He showed a natural talent for drawing from childhood. His abilities drew the attention of John Ernest Jasper, a civil servant who encouraged him to study art in Java. Kasenda became known for his landscapes of Java and Bali, as well as cityscapes of Singapore. Newspapers of his time described him as sometimes playful, sometimes gentle, and at other times romantic or complex. His works often depict rice fields, rivers, and Balinese temples at night, capturing both everyday life and the beauty of Indonesia’s natural scenery.
