Joan Miro
1893 – 1983
Joan Miró (1893-1983) was a highly influential Catalan artist who fused abstract art with Surrealist fantasy. Born in Barcelona, Spain, his unique style developed from the interplay between his whimsical, poetic nature and his perception of modern lifes harsh realities.
Mirós art, though often seen as Surrealist, possessed a deeply personal touch, sometimes leaning into Fauvism and Expressionism. He was fascinated by the unconscious mind, frequently re-creating a childlike innocence in his works. His difficult-to-classify art also expressed his Catalan pride. Throughout his career, Miró openly criticized conventional painting methods as supporting bourgeois society, famously advocating for an assassination of painting to disrupt established visual norms. He extensively explored lithography and created numerous murals, tapestries, and sculptures for public spaces, earning international acclaim.
