Tung Yue Nang
B. 1959
Tung Yue Nang is a Singaporean artist who developed an early passion for art and, at 15, began training in Chinese painting, calligraphy, seal carving, and engraving under the pioneer artist-educator Shi Xiang Tuo. While his practice has since expanded to include acrylic, mixed media, collage, sculpture, and photography, Chinese brush-and-ink remains at its core, guided by Taoist ideals of harmony, tranquility, and simplicity.
Known for his dramatic monochrome works that blend Western composition with refined Chinese brushwork, he captures cultural landscapes and human figures with precision and richness. Over the decades, Tung has received numerous accolades, including the Meritorious Award at the Beautiful Singapore River Art Competition (1977), the Commendation Award at the UOB Painting of the Year (1985), and First Prize at the Dr Tan Tze Chor Art Award (2002, 2014).
