Xooang Choi
B. 1975
Xooang Choi is a Korean sculptor known for his unsettling and thought-provoking figurative works. He earned his MFA from Seoul National University and, since 2007, has worked on a larger scale to create pieces that unearth dark emotions and explore social issues. His sculptures, which often modify human proportions or isolate body parts, delve into themes of human rights, discrimination, isolation, and loneliness.
Choi's work uses hyperrealistic techniques to capture raw human emotion, but his sculptures are also surreal, with bodies that are distorted, exaggerated, or merged with other forms. Created from clay and resin, his figures have extremely detailed, powerful expressions that reflect feelings of fear, bitterness, and anger. Choi focuses on how modern social systems control people and their emotions, inviting viewers to question their own role in society. He has exhibited in numerous museums and galleries in South Korea and internationally such as in France, Italy, Singapore, and many more.
