Wahdi Sumanta
1917 – 1996
Born in Bandung in 1917, Wahdi Sumanta discovered his passion for drawing as early as his school years and later studied painting under Abdullah Suriosubroto, father of Basuki Abdullah. He further honed his skills alongside Affandi in Bandung and went on to teach, counting Hendra Gunawan among his students. In 1949, he joined the Saint Lucas Gilde in Bandung and co-founded the Kelompok Lima with Affandi, Hendra, Sudarso, and Barli.
Known primarily as a landscape painter, Wahdi also founded Sanggar Sangkurian in 1975 and held several important exhibitions, including group and solo shows at Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) and Balai Budaya, Jakarta, in the 1970s. Alongside his art, Wahdi also taught drawing and managed a furniture business in Bandung.
