Abas Alibasyah
1928 – 2016
Abas Alibasyah was born in Purwakarta on 1 March 1928. He studied at Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia (ASRI, Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts) in Yogyakarta from 1950 to 1956. Throughout his career, he taught at several schools and universities in Yogyakarta, including ASRI and Universitas Gadjah Mada. Eventually, he became a lecturer at ASRI and later served as its principal.
Abas initially painted landscapes before developing an interest in ethnic objects. His works are known for their balanced compositions of color and form. He received numerous awards from both the Indonesian government and international institutions, including Piagam Anugerah Seni (Indonesia, 1975), the Cultural Award Scheme from the Australian government (1970), Best Work in Painting at Biennale Indonesia (1974), and the Lempad Award from Sanggar Dewata Indonesia (1984). He passed away in 2016.
