Kartika Affandi
B. 1934
Kartika Affandi, the only daughter of Indonesia’s legendary painter Affandi, is one of the most prominent female expressionist artists in Southeast Asia. She studied art at Tagore University in Shantiniketan, India, under the guidance of Nandalal Bose and other masters. In 1958, she held a touring exhibition in Vienna and has since exhibited widely around the world.
Kartika has received numerous international recognitions, including an Honorary Doctorate in Art and Culture from Northern California Global University (2004), an Honorary Maestro Degree in Pittura from Italy, and a Golden Medal from the Academica of Salsomaggiore, Italy.
Deeply inspired by nature and human emotion, Kartika’s paintings are known for their vivid energy, honesty, and spontaneity. She continues her father’s legacy of painting directly with her fingers and paint tubes, a method that allows her to channel raw emotion and rhythm into each composition.
