Yi Hwan Kwon
B. 1974
Yi Hwan-Kwon is a South Korean sculptor whose works blur the line between reality and illusion. He earned his B.F.A. from Kyung Won University (now Gachon University) in 2001, followed by an M.F.A. in 2004. Early in his career, he received the Superior Prize at the World Ceramic Expo Sculpture Park Exhibition (2001), marking the beginning of his growing recognition.
Yi’s distinctive approach involves translating digitally distorted photographs into three-dimensional sculptures. His figures—sometimes stretched, sometimes compressed—retain striking realism and meticulous detail, evoking both humor and surreal tension.
Since the early 2000s, Yi has exhibited widely in South Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, Germany, United States, United Kingdom, and many other places. His works began attracting significant attention from collectors in the late 2000s, achieving notable auction results.
