Zhou Chunya
B. 1955
Zhou Chunya is a contemporary artist from China who is known for fusing the spirit of Chinese literati painting with the emotional intensity of German Neo-Expressionism. A graduate of the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts and later the Kassel Academy of Fine Arts in Germany (1988), Zhou developed a distinct visual language marked by bold color, fluid brushwork, and psychological depth. His well-known series — Rock, Green Dog, and Peach Blossom — reflect his continuous exploration of emotion, beauty, and resistance, balancing traditional refinement with raw expressiveness.
Zhou’s works have been exhibited internationally at major institutions such as the Shanghai Art Museum, Singapore Art Museum, Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Irish Museum of Modern Art. Beyond his artistic achievements, he established the Five Colors Fund to support art-based therapy and education for people affected by disability and natural disasters.
