Agus Suwage
B. 1959
Agus Suwage is one of the most prominent figures in contemporary Indonesian art. Emerging in the 1990s during a time of intense social and political change, Suwage’s work explores themes of identity, power, and cultural commentary. Drawing on references from Indonesian and global art history, philosophy, music, and politics, his practice bridges personal reflection and critical observation—creating powerful visual dialogues that resonate across time and cultures.
A graduate of the Bandung Institute of Technology (1979–1986), Suwage has held residencies at Queensland University of Technology, Australia (1996), and the Museum of Modern Art, Saitama, Japan (1999–2000). His work has been exhibited internationally in both solo and group exhibitions, including in Australia, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea, Thailand, Mexico, and the United States.
