Soetopo, born in Yogyakarta on April 13, 1931, studied painting at the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts (ASRI) under Hendra Gunawan, Trubus, and Soedarso. Since 1950, he has actively exhibited his work and contributed to major public art projects, including murals and reliefs for Hotel Indonesia, Ambarukmo Hotel, Satu Maret Monument, Palagan Ambarawa, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, and the Satria Mandala Museum in Jakarta.
His exhibitions include the 1955 Asian-African Conference exhibition in Bandung, Diversity in Harmony in Yogyakarta, the Borobudur International Festival at Museum H. Widayat (2002), Footsteps in Yogyakarta (2003), and Membaca Dunia Widayat at Museum H. Widayat (2004).
