Lucia Hartini
1959 – 2025
Lucia Hartini is a prominent Indonesian surrealist painter. She studied at SSRI Yogyakarta, where she earned the Pratitha Adhi Karya award in both 1976 and 1977. Since 1980, she has developed a unique style that merges realism with surrealism, using oil on canvas and a meticulous hatching technique that requires great precision. Her art explores the duality of the realistic and spiritual worlds, often blending natural phenomena like water, clouds, and cosmic elements to express her profound connection to nature and the divine.
Hartini’s works frequently focus on themes of women and the universe, often using herself as a central figure to reflect on personal anxieties and limitations. Her artistic vision is inspired by her spiritual experiences, which she claims to have encountered through meditation. She has held solo exhibitions at Bentara Budaya Yogyakarta and participated in numerous group shows both in Indonesia and internationally, cementing her reputation as a master of a uniquely detailed and emotionally resonant surrealism.
