Yap Hian Tjay

Indonesia Indonesia

B. 1927

Yap Hian Tjay was born in Surakarta, Central Java, in 1927. Between 1950 and 1957, he studied at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Rotterdam and the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. A pupil of Siauw Tik Kwie, Yap built a reputation for consistency and technical excellence, working primarily in a naturalistic style. His works have been collected widely in Indonesia, Vietnam, Poland, and abroad. In Indonesia, his paintings are part of the collection of the Presidential Palace.

Yap was especially drawn to scenes of farmers harvesting rice. He often sought out harvest sites by asking locals, determined to ground his art in authentic observation. This dedication to naturalistic landscapes made his work resonate with a wide audience, including Indonesia’s sixth president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who particularly admired his depictions of rural scenery. During Yudhoyono’s presidency, many of Yap Hian Tjay’s works were collected.
