I. B. Said
B. 1934
I. B. Said was born in Malang on 28 August 1934. Before moving to Jakarta in 1961, he spent many years working at Sanggar Pelukis Rakyat in Yogyakarta. Upon the invitation of legendary painter Henk Ngantung, Said became involved in painting portraits of visiting heads of state. From the early 1960s, during the presidency of Sukarno, he was regularly commissioned to create official portraits of foreign dignitaries visiting Indonesia. These works were prominently displayed at airports, along protocol routes, and at the forecourt of Istana Merdeka. His first official portrait was of Chinese President Liu Shaoqi in 1963, while his last was of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in May 2006. Over the course of his career, I. B. Said produced approximately 300 portraits of heads of state and government.
