Made Budhiana was born in Denpasar, Bali. He received formal recognition early in his career, earning awards from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta for Sketch and Painting in 1979, followed by the Pratisara Affandi Adikarya in 1986, a Poster Award from the Department of Education in 1985, and the Bali Art Award for Best Painting in 1997. Since 1980, Budhiana has actively participated in numerous joint exhibitions in Indonesia and abroad, including in Jakarta, Bali, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the United States, Australia, Singapore, and Germany. He has also held solo exhibitions in Darwin (1989), Ganesha Gallery in Bali (1998), and Sika Contemporary Art Gallery in Ubud (2001).
At the core of Budhiana’s artistic philosophy is freedom. He resists confining himself to any single style or category, including abstraction, and allows his practice to move fluidly across form, color, theme, two-dimensional and three-dimensional works, as well as experimental ideas.
