B. 1961
Luo Fahui was born in Chongqing, China, in 1961 and graduated from the Sichuan Fine Art Institute in 1985. Growing
up during the Cultural Revolution and coming of age in the period following China’s Reform and Opening Up, Luo
Fahui reflects deeply on the social, political, and cultural transformations of modern China. His work engages with
the country’s layered realities, where feudal traditions coexist with Communist ideology and rapid global integration.
In contrast to many of his avant-garde peers, Luo Fahui chose not to pursue a career centered in Beijing, Shanghai,
or overseas. Instead, he establishes his practice in Chengdu, Sichuan, where he found sustained inspiration and
artistic freedom. He has held numerous solo exhibitions at institutions including the Shanghai Art Museum,
Zhangjiang Contemporary Arts Museum, and venues in Hong Kong, Macau, Indonesia, and the United Kingdom.
His work has also been widely featured in major group exhibitions across China, Europe, and Asia.
