Hanafi
B. 1960
Hanafi was born in Purworejo, Central Java, in 1960 and is known as one of the notable artists to emerge alongside figures such as Agus Suwage and Ivan Sagita. He studied at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta beginning in 1979, though he did not pursue formal academic titles, choosing instead to follow an independent artistic path. Hanafi has held solo exhibitions in Jakarta, Bali, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Barcelona, and Toronto, and has participated in major group exhibitions including the Jakarta Biennale IX, Movement Jakarta, and the Philip Morris Art Award Exhibition.
Widely associated with lyrical abstraction, Hanafi’s paintings are marked by spontaneity, emotional sensitivity, and a strong personal identity. He was listed among the Top 10 artists of the Philip Morris Art Award in 1997, affirming his position within Indonesia’s contemporary art scene. In 2004, he further demonstrated his expressive approach by performing a live, spontaneous painting during the Olympic event in Athens.
