Nisan Kristiyanto

Nisan Kristiyanto was born in Blora, Central Java, near the hometown of writer Pramoedya Ananta Toer. The seventh of eight siblings, he supported his studies partly through family assistance before earning independently by selling paintings at Pasar Seni Ancol in Jakarta during the mid-1970s. While still a student, he was influenced by the dominant abstract trends of the time, particularly abstract expressionism. However, following the artistic debates surrounding the “Black December” protest in 1974, he shifted toward a naturalistic approach that has defined his work ever since.

Nisan is best known for his detailed landscape paintings, especially scenes of rice fields rendered with delicate lines and fine dot techniques. His works are often associated with the legacy of Mooi Indie, celebrating the beauty of Indonesia’s natural environment, yet they carry a personal sensitivity and disciplined craftsmanship. His career gained wider recognition after being noticed by architect and gallery owner Hendra Hadiprana, leading to broader exposure and inclusion in important collections.
