Marlan Jass

Marlan Jass is an Indonesian painter known for his realist depictions of Indonesian landscapes, cultural scenes, flowers, and koi fish. He studied at ASRI Medan in 1957 and later developed his practice through various art communities in Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Bali. In addition to painting, he also worked in television and film production as an art director and set decorator. His works include portraits of prominent figures such as Sukarno, Suharto, B. J. Habibie, Lee Kuan Yew, and Ferdinand Marcos.

The 2002 Bali bombings deeply moved Marlan Jass and inspired him to paint Balinese subjects, including dancers and women carrying offerings. Alongside these cultural themes, he frequently portrays the beauty of Indonesia’s natural environment. Active for more than five decades, he has held numerous exhibitions and his works are included in private collections across Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
