Ida Bagus Made Nadera
1910 – 1998
Ida Bagus Nadera was a Balinese painter from Tegallinggah, Gianyar, who dedicated his life to the development of Balinese art. Largely self-taught, he later received guidance from influential artists Rudolf Bonnet and Walter Spies, whose ideas helped shape his artistic practice. He worked primarily in the traditional Balinese style, while also incorporating stylistic influences introduced through Bali's artistic exchanges with European artists.
Between 1932 and 1940, Nadera was an active member of the influential Pita Maha, which played a crucial role in the development of modern Balinese painting. Following World War II, he joined the Ubud Artists’ Association and remained deeply involved in Bali’s cultural life, not only as a painter but also as a dalang (wayang puppet master). In 1959, he established his own studio, where he continued to paint until his passing in 1998. In recognition of his contribution to Balinese art and culture, he received the Wija Kusuma Art Award from Gianyar and the Dharma Kusuma Award from the Government of Bali in 1988.
