1885 – 1945
Jan Frank Niemantsverdriet was a Dutch painter, draftsman, etcher, and wood engraver born in Kalimaro, West Java, to a Dutch father and a Javanese mother. He came to Amsterdam in 1907 and studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague from 1908 to 1910. Then he returned to the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) in 1921 and settling in Batavia.
His work spanned landscapes, genre paintings, still lifes, and portraits, including official portraits of governors Bonifacius Cornelis de Jonge and Dirk Fock. Beyond his practice, he gave private painting lessons in Batavia and was appointed curator of the National Art Collection in 1939. He signed his works "Jan Frank" or "JFN" and remained in Batavia until his death in 1945.
