I Made Wiradana
B. 1968

I Made Wiradana is a contemporary Balinese artist known for challenging conventional ideas of art through a distinctive postmodern approach. Born in Denpasar, he graduated from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta and later served as Chairman of Sanggar Dewata Indonesia, an influential organisation of modern Balinese artists, from 2000 to 2002. While rooted in Balinese artistic traditions, Wiradana explores contemporary social and cultural issues through works that question established artistic conventions. His practice often reinterprets Western aesthetics, offering alternative perspectives on concepts such as beauty, representation, and visual perception.

A defining moment in his career came with the exhibition Deklarasi Seni Akhir 2001 at ARMA Museum, Ubud, where he presented a provocative critique of Western artistic values through irony and parody. Since then, his works have been exhibited extensively across Indonesia and internationally, including in Hong Kong, South Korea, China, India, and Belgium. His achievements have been recognised through numerous awards, among them honours from the Embassy of Indonesia in Belgium, the Consulate General of Indonesia in China, the National Museum of Qingdao, and a Gold Medal at the Art Asia Biennale in Hong Kong in 2017. He was also a three-time finalist in the Philip Morris Indonesian Art Awards, one of the country's most prestigious art competitions.
