B. 1952

Caroline Young was born in Hong Kong and later moved to Hawaii for university, where an encounter with artist Lam Oi Char changed the course of her life. Although she initially studied French, she soon dedicated herself to painting under her mentor's guidance. Young works in watercolour, acrylic, and gouache on Japanese silk using the traditional Chinese gongbi technique. The process requires countless translucent layers of colour, resulting in extraordinary precision and a luminous quality that seems to radiate from within. A single painting often takes six to eight weeks to complete.

Ancient Chinese mythology lies at the heart of Young's artistic practice. Stories of Chang-Er, Kwan Yin, dragons, and celestial beings become richly symbolic compositions that weave together history, folklore, Buddhism, and Taoist philosophy. Through these narratives, she explores themes that transcend cultural boundaries while celebrating China's artistic and literary heritage. Her paintings have been exhibited throughout the United States and are held in major collections, including the Bowers Museum and the Pacific Asia Museum.
