Lee Jung Woong

Korea, Republic of (South) Korea, Republic of (South)

B. 1963

Lee Jungwoong is a contemporary Korean artist celebrated for his masterful fusion of Eastern traditions and Western painting techniques. He graduated with a Master's degree in Fine Arts from Keimyung University in 2007. Working with Korean rice paper, Chinese brushes, ebony ink, and oil paint, Lee has developed a distinctive visual language that combines hyperrealism with the expressive spirit of East Asian calligraphy. His paintings explore the relationship between materiality, movement, and spirituality, transforming familiar objects into quiet meditations on balance, time, and artistic practice.

Lee is best known for his iconic Brush series, in which the humble calligraphy brush becomes both subject and symbol. Rendered with extraordinary precision, each strand of hair, polished wooden handle, and ink-soaked surface reveals his remarkable technical mastery. Yet these works extend beyond realism. Through the contrast between fluid ink and controlled brushwork, empty space and solid form, Lee reflects on the complementary forces of yin and yang while bridging Eastern philosophy with Western painterly traditions. His paintings have been exhibited internationally across Asia, Europe, and the United States.
