Earl Lu Ming-Teh
1925 – 2005

Dr. Earl Lu-Ming Teh was a Singaporean surgeon, painter, collector, and philanthropist whose lifelong dedication to medicine was matched by an enduring passion for art. Born in Hong Kong, he spent his early years across Hong Kong, Shanghai, Malaysia, and Singapore before completing his medical education at the University of Sydney. Returning to Singapore in 1958, Lu built a distinguished career as a consultant surgeon for more than four decades at Mount Alvernia, Mount Elizabeth, and Gleneagles Hospitals. Alongside his medical practice, he cultivated a deep appreciation for Chinese art, painting, and ceramics, becoming one of Singapore's most respected art patrons and collectors.

Painting remained a constant throughout Lu's life. Influenced by the traditions of Chinese brush painting passed down through his family, he developed a distinctive body of work celebrated for its refined technique and quiet elegance, with roses becoming one of his signature subjects. His commitment to preserving Asian artistic heritage extended beyond his own practice. Over the years, he assembled an important collection of Chinese and Southeast Asian ceramics, much of which he later donated to public museums, including the Singapore Art Museum. Through both his paintings and philanthropy, Lu made a lasting contribution to Singapore's artistic and cultural landscape.
