As the holiday season begins, Global Auction is delighted to present 123 exceptional artworks in its highly anticipated December 2024 event, “Southeast Asian, Chinese, Modern & Contemporary Art.” Running online from December 5 to 17, the auction culminates in an exciting live finale on December 17, 2024. The collection highlights a stunning array of styles, techniques, and mediums from renowned Indonesian and international artists, offering something for every art enthusiast and collector.

This season’s auction showcases masterpieces by celebrated artists such as Affandi, Hendra Gunawan, Srihadi Soedarsono, S. Sudjojono, Ahmad Sadali, Basoeki Abdullah, and many more. Affandi


Affandi is one of the most prominent maestros in 20th-century Indonesian art. He was the first Indonesian artist to participate in the prestigious São Paulo Biennale (1952) and Venice Biennale (1954). Furthermore, his work is also currently exhibited in the Venice Biennale 2024.

“Carriage Terminal” by Affandi is a vivid and dynamic depiction of a rural scene, capturing the bustling yet serene ambiance of a traditional carriage stop. The painting features carriages with their horses, along with the passengers. Surrounding the scene are lush, shaded trees and tall coconut trees. The bright blue sky, punctuated by billowing clouds, enhances the sense of openness and vibrancy. The work radiates energy, as if the wind rustles through the trees and the horses are poised for movement. Affandi's signature swirling brushstrokes and expressive style are also easily noticeable.


Hendra Gunawan


Hendra Gunawan, an iconic Indonesian maestro born in Bandung, began his artistic journey in the 1930s, blending traditional themes with modern approaches. His celebrated works, featured in galleries worldwide, including the Venice Biennale 2024, are highly sought after. This month's auction features two of his pieces: Woman (Wanita) and Roasted Corn Party (Pesta Jagung Bakar).

The woman, dressed in a traditional kebaya and vibrant kain, holds a tampah (a traditional woven tray) with two green soursops, reflecting Indonesia's daily life and cultural essence.

Srihadi Soedarsono

Srihadi Soedarsono, a prominent figure in modern Indonesian art, is celebrated for his mastery of color, composition, and form, earning numerous awards, including the National Award for Contemporary Art (1971) and the Cultural Award from Australia (1973).

His Borobudur - Journey of the Soul (2007) is a breathtaking portrayal of Indonesia's cultural and spiritual heritage. The iconic Borobudur temple is depicted from a distance, its silhouette surrounded by a serene yet vibrant expanse of purple sky. A soft white glow radiates across the horizon, enhancing the temple's ethereal presence. At the center top, a swirling circular light suggests a spiritual energy, drawing the viewer’s gaze upward and evoking a sense of transcendence.
Srihadi’s expressive use of color reflects an emotional connection to the landscape, creating a meditative atmosphere that blends modernist techniques with deep spiritual resonance, solidifying his legacy in Indonesian art.

 

S. Sudjojono

Sindudarsono Sudjojono, also known as S. Sudjojono, was a pioneering Indonesian artist, art critic, and writer, often hailed as the father of Indonesian modern art.  He played a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s art movement, co-founding influential collectives such as PERSAGI (Association of Indonesia Drawing Specialists) and Seniman Indonesia Muda (Young Indonesian Artists' Collective), which championed the expression of authentic Indonesian identity in art.

Basoeki Abdullah

Basoeki Abdullah, a renowned Indonesian painter, was celebrated for his mastery of realism. Formally trained in The Hague, he worked as an art teacher during the Japanese occupation of Indonesia and rose to international fame after winning an art contest marking Queen Juliana's accession in the Netherlands.
