Auction Highlights
Basoeki Abdullah - Tiger Family

Oil on canvas: 100 x 150 cm
Basoeki Abdullah is regarded as one of Indonesia's finest realist painters. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, he gained international recognition after winning a portrait competition marking the accession of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands. His exceptional skill later led him to paint presidents, royalty, and prominent figures from around the world. Beyond portraiture, Basoeki found enduring inspiration in Indonesia's landscapes and wildlife.
Tiger Family reveals a quieter side of nature. Rather than portraying the ferocity often associated with tigers, Basoeki captures a peaceful yet vigilant moment as a pair of adults watch over their cubs beneath the shelter of a dense tropical forest. Gentle light falls across their striped coats, revealing subtle variations in colour, texture, and anatomy, while the softly painted foliage frames the family without overpowering it. The work exemplifies Basoeki's ability to balance scientific precision with sensitivity.
Ahmad Sadali - Golden Bars on a Plane with Traces of Gold, 1987

Mixed media on canvas: 47 x 55 cm
Ahmad Sadali was among the first Indonesian artists to embrace abstraction as a means of expressing spiritual thought. After studying at Institut Teknologi Bandung and continuing his education in the United States, he developed a visual language that merged modern abstraction with Islamic philosophy.
In Golden Bars on a Plane with Traces of Gold, textured golden forms, muted grey, earthy black, and turquoise accents come together in a carefully balanced composition. The work embodies Sadali's belief that painting could become a space for contemplation, where simplicity and texture evoke a profound sense of harmony.
Dullah - Keris Dance, 1967

Oil on canvas: 72 x 101 cm
Dullah was one of Indonesia's foremost realist painters, renowned for documenting the nation's history, culture, and traditions through art. Born in Surakarta to a family of batik makers, he studied under S. Sudjojono and Affandi as a member of Seniman Indonesia Muda (SIM). His powerful depictions of the Indonesian Revolution earned him the title of the "Revolutionary Painter," before he was later appointed by President Soekarno as the official painter and curator of Istana Merdeka.
Keris Dance reflects Dullah's enduring interest in Indonesia's cultural heritage. The painting depicts the dramatic confrontation between Barong and Rangda, central figures in one of Bali's most sacred ritual performances. During the dance, performers enter a trance and stab themselves with keris daggers, yet remain unharmed under Barong's spiritual protection. Rendered in Dullah's signature realist style, the painting faithfully captures the movement, atmosphere, and spiritual significance of the ceremony.
Affandi - Boats at the Beach, 1981

Oil on canvas: 97 x 127.5 cm
Affandi is one of Indonesia's most influential modern artists and a pioneer of expressive painting in Southeast Asia. Throughout his career, he developed a highly personal style, often applying paint directly from the tube to create the sweeping, energetic lines that became his hallmark. His bold approach brought him international acclaim and established him as one of the country's most celebrated artists.
Boats at the Beach is a fine example of this distinctive style. The fishing boats appear animated by swirling brushstrokes, while the movement of the sea and sky flows seamlessly across the canvas. Rather than simply recording a coastal scene, Affandi captures its energy and atmosphere, transforming an everyday landscape into a powerful expression of life and emotion.
Lee Jung Woong - Brush

Mixed media on Korean paper: 140 x 200 cm
This auction also presents a work by contemporary South Korean artist Lee Jung Woong, whose practice bridges Eastern artistic traditions with Western painting techniques. Working with Korean rice paper, Chinese ink, and oil paint, Lee has developed a distinctive visual language that combines hyperrealism with the expressive spirit of East Asian calligraphy. His works have been exhibited internationally across Asia, Europe, and the United States, earning recognition for their remarkable technical precision and philosophical depth.
Brush belongs to Lee's iconic series in which the humble calligraphy brush becomes both subject and symbol. Every strand of hair and polished wooden handle is depicted with extraordinary precision, while the dramatic splash of ink introduces a striking contrast between movement and stillness.
