Auction Highlights
Flamboyant Tree and Cow Herder (Flamboyan dan Penggembala Sapi), 2001 by Widayat

Oil on canvas: 150 x 135.5 cm
Widayat was born in Kutoarjo, Central Java, in 1919. He belonged to the first generation of artists that was trained at the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts (ASRI) and has since then spent much of his life teaching at the institution, guiding and influencing many Indonesian artists. His works are known for their familiar yet magical feeling which are caused by combining Indonesian traditional elements with modern approaches.
In his work titled Flamboyant Tree and Cow Herder (2001), a huge tree is seen on top of a hill, where its branches are filled with red leaves that are drawn in patterned strokes. The usage of the colour red contrasts with the cool blue and green surrounding landscapes, which if seen closely, are depictions of plants and distant trees. The red also adds colour to the massive brown tree trunk and soil. Small white cows and a herder are also seen around the tree, showcasing the harmonious relationship between nature and rural life. Three of Widayat’s works, including this one, is available in the current auction.
Seated Balinese Maiden by Lee Man Fong

Oil on board: 102 x 50 cm
Born in Guangzhou, China, in 1913, Lee Man Fong later established his career in Jakarta where he became one of the first non-Dutch artists to exhibit with the Dutch East Indies Association. He was then appointed as a palace artist to Sukarno, making him one of the most respected painters during the time.
His works showcase a combination of the East and West due to his upbringing and studies in the Netherlands, putting together the traditional Chinese brushstrokes with the Western oil painting technique.
In one of his works titled Seated Balinese Maiden, a woman is seen sitting on the ground, seemingly a part of nature herself as she blends in with the branches in the background. She wears a red headdress and cloth around her waist, which is paired with a green skirt. These colours create a contrast which makes the painting appear more striking and brings attention onto the woman. Aside from this artwork, there are two other works by Lee Man Fong in the auction.
Banyan Tree (Pohon Beringin), 1972 by Affandi

Oil on canvas: 120 x 200 cm
Born in Cirebon in 1907, Affandi has become one of the most influential figures in twentieth century Indonesian modern art. He was mostly self taught and sees painting as a channel for emotions rather than a reproduction of reality. Due to this, he developed a highly expressive style, renowned for its swirling brushstrokes and vivid colours. Throughout his career, his works have earned him many international recognition and were exhibited at major events such as the Venice Biennale and the São Paulo Biennale.
His work titled Banyan Tree (1972) showcases one of his favourite subjects to paint. The massive tree dominates the composition with its tangled branches and foliage which are rendered in energetic strokes of green and yellow. Beneath it shows a traditional gapura, or temple gateway, accompanied by small figures painted in white and red, contrasting with the predominantly green and yellow. The two combined creates a scene, showing how nature, village life, and spirituality intertwine. Two works by Affandi are featured at the current auction.
Balinese Ceremony (Upacara Bali), 1977 by Harijadi Sumadidjaja

Oil on canvas: 84 x 122 cm
Harijadi Sumadidjaja, born in Ketawang, Central Java, in 1919, is an Indonesian maestro who joined Seniman Masjarakat in 1946 alongside other renowned artists such as Hendra Gunawan, Rusli, and Affandi.
His painting titled Balinese Ceremony (1977) is an example of how he used natural and vibrant colours to bring the scene to life through his realist style. The artwork employs a diagonal perspective in which the composition is divided into three parts.
The foreground features large black coral rocks and two seated men observing the ongoing ceremony. The middle ground highlights the traditional Melasti purification ritual, showing how the procession is done, with vibrant colours coming from the traditional attire used and details of the offerings brought. As for the background, it reflects Bali’s natural beauty, with the ocean waves, distant volcanic mountains, and a bright sky filled with clouds. With all three, the painting displays both a scenic beauty and a story. Aside from this painting, another work (sculpture) by Harijadi Sumadidjaja is available in the current auction.
Three Women and Flowers (Tiga Wanita dan Bunga), 1975 by Hendra Gunawan

Oil on canvas: 90 x 145 cm
Born in Bandung, West Java, in 1918, Hendra Gunawan was a pioneering Indonesian artist known for his bold colours and expressive compositions. He began painting in the 1930s and has earned the reputation of “people’s painter” as he frequently brought up the theme and subject of everyday life and ordinary communities in his works. He has then gained multiple international recognition and was recently featured in the Venice Biennale 2024, and other major institutions such as the Neka Art Museum and the Singapore Art Museum.
In his work titled Three Women and Flowers (1975), a group of women are seen sitting down in a coastal setting, having a basket of flowers and offerings beside them. A larger group of people are seen in the background, yet the focus stays on the three as their skins and clothes are painted in vibrant colours. Whether this scene depicts them preparing arrangements, selling them, or simply taking a break, their gestures and expressions suggest companionship and show the quiet moments in life. The subject being women also reflects how Hendra Gunawan sees them as essential in everyday life.
