Auction Highlights

Cherry Blossoms, 1990 by Widayat

Lot 001
Oil on canvas: 100 x 150 cm

Born in Kutoarjo, Central Java, in 1919, Widayat studied at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI) in Yogyakarta before eventually becoming a lecturer there. He then decided to continue his studies in Nagoya, Japan, where he further developed his artstyle. Throughout his career, he has received many awards such as the BKPM Award in 1953, a Cultural Award from the Indonesian government in 1972, Best Painting at the Yogyakarta Biennial in 1986, and the ASEAN Award in Brunei Darussalam in 1993.

Many describe his works as enchanting and magical due to the usage of rhythmically repeated motifs, as well as taking inspiration from mythology and religious literature. His work titled Cherry Blossoms (1990) is an example of how his studies in Japan have influenced his creative direction. The textured surface of the dark tree trunks contrasts the dense clusters of blossoms which fills the entire canvas in small, repeated strokes of pink and warm ochre. This work showcases the depiction of sakura through his signature style. Aside from this artwork, there are five other available pieces from Widayat in this auction.

Barong and Keris Dancers, 1979 by Hendra Gunawan

As an Indonesian modern master from Bandung, Hendra Gunawan began painting back in the 1930s. His works are known for blending traditional themes with bold colors, in which many received international recognition such as at the Venice Biennale 2024.

Lot 002
Oil on canvas, 145 x 95 cm

His work titled Barong and Keris Dancers (1979) showcases a scene from a traditional Balinese Barong dance, in which he uses bright colors such as red, orange, pink, green, and blue to create a dynamic and immersive composition. The Barong in the middle is a symbol of good, whereas in the foreground, the two dancers who seem to have plunged their keris into their chests symbolizes the triumph of good over evil.

Sydney Harbor, 1985 by Sudjana Kerton

Sudjana Kerton was a renowned artist from Bandung, born in 1922, who is considered one of Indonesia’s leading expressionist painters. His works are known for documenting the struggles of Indonesia’s independence through sketches, sculptures, and paintings. Due to his talent, he received several opportunities to study abroad, such as a fellowship in Amsterdam and Paris, as well as a scholarship to study at the prestigious Art Students League of New York. Doing so helped him develop his skills and broaden his international outlook.

Lot 003
Oil on canvas, 100 x 120 cm

His works are celebrated for its raw, expressive style and its deep social consciousness. In his painting titled Sydney Harbor (1985), the water dominates with its striking deep turquoise color. Yet, the addition of warm-toned buildings, boats, and people create a bustling, narrative scene which radiates much energy; making the painting seemingly come to life.

Girl Holding Yellow Umbrella, 1992 by Pang Maokun

Pang Maokun is a significant figure in contemporary Chinese oil painting who was born in Chongqing in 1963. He has received formal training at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in which he completed his master’s degree in 1988 and is currently serving as the president. His works have been exhibited at major institutions in China and internationally, including in Paris, Kassel, St. Petersburg, and Florence, and are held in prominent museums and private collections.

Lot 005
Oil on canvas, 117 x 90 cm

In his artwork, Girl Holding Yellow Umbrella (1992), his usage of a muted gray background while showcasing a vibrant yellow umbrella creates a luminous effect. Combined with the soft rendering of the woman, her calm expression, and a detailed traditional attire with restraint strokes, it results in a painting that seems delicate.

Fish Drying, 1963 by Affandi

Known as one of Indonesia’s most influential modern artists of the 20th century, Affandi, born in 1907 in Cirebon, was a self-taught painter whose distinct style is using bold colors and expressive, strong strokes which are usually a result of squeezing paint directly from the tube. This style has often been compared to Van Gogh and is a way for him to channel his emotions onto the canvas. Throughout his career, he has received several awards and recognition, with many of his works being showcased in prestigious exhibitions worldwide, including the Venice Biennale and the São Paulo Biennale.

Lot 006
Oil on canvas, 100 x 120 cm

His painting titled Fish Drying (1963) depicts the common activity of drying fish under the sun within the coastal areas of Indonesia. He used bold, dark strokes to outline the rows of fish and layered them with tones of yellow, brown, green, and black. In the background, several strokes are seen to represent the roofs and structural forms of a seaside village. Sticking to his renowned style, the paints are applied thickly to create a textured surface, and further reinforces the presence of heat within the setting.
